International dance festival of contemporary and neoclassical ballet

This year’s Dance Brno 2019 continues in last year’s Dance Brno 100 and more than a quarter of a century in Brno featured festival Tanec Brno by Ballet NdB. The current year presents one of the leading Baltic groups, the Lithuanian National Ballet. The Programme is completed by the Slovenian Ballet of the National Theatre in Maribor, the Italian contemporary dance ensemble Spellbound Contemporary Ballet, and as a Czech representative the audience can see the Ballet of the South Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice.

Spectators can look forward to a varied program consisting mainly of neoclassical and contemporary choreographies.

Continue to the festival programme.

7th May 2019 at 7 pm at the Mahen Theatre

Ballet of the South Bohemian Theatre: Keys from Nowhere

Choreography: Petr Zuska Music: Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janáček

The feature dance theatre relies on a sharp contrast between two very different musical works. These are the compositions of two incomparable genius Czech composers, Dvořák’s Requiem and Janáček’s piano lyricism. In the first case it is a “high” spiritual symphonic-vocal music, in the second one a “mere” and lone piano. Petr Zuska’s full-length “choreographic variation” is inspired by his recent visit to the abandoned house of his grandparents. It has been inhabited by a single woman for the past few decades, who later died in complete solitude.

Choreography: Martynas Rimeikis Music: Mindaugas Urbaitis

Der Prozess, based on Franz Kafka’s novel, is the first feature work of young Lithuanian choreographer Martynas Rimeikis. Along with the impressive original music and the cold scene representing the monumental guillotine, the author tells a strong story confronting man’s individuality and official system.

Spellbound Contemporary Ballet: Rossini Ouverture

Choreography and Direction: Mauro Astolfi Music: Gioachino Rossini

Spellbound sets out on a dream journey lined with many memories and characters who tell a story about a man, lonely, cheerful, sad and brave. These memories and characters inhabit a symbolic and mysterious structure that is nothing more than a great archive, the secret house of Rossini, who has preserved, cataloged and transformed his charm, his food, his love.

Choreography: Edward Clug / Mauro Bigonzetti Music: Balanescu / Gruppo Musicale Assurd

Choreographer Edward Clug, for the first time in his career, turns to his roots and the musical heritage of his native Romania, exploring the meaning of fateful events in our lives and the power of rituals in society. His musical motif was sophisticated and carefully adjusted ethnic elements in the creation of the legendary string quartet Balanescu. / Cantata Unique choreographic language, passionate and inner gestures reflecting Mediterranean temperament, evoke a whole spectrum of emotions that, in contrast to the bitter-sweet traditional melodies of southern Italy, celebrate the beauty of life in its ubiquity and sensuality.
